Overview: The Basic Summer Color Palette
Hello, lovely ladies!
Today we will be taking a closer look at the Soft Summer Color Palette
We are done – for now – with the Winter Color Season and will be moving forward with the subdomains of the basic Summer Color Season; which is a cool color season as well, but the main noticeable difference with this lovely color season is the fact that it is muted, subtle, and much calmer than her sister season of winter, which is intense, bold and vibrant in color and energy. If you haven’t read the sub-domains for the winter color season, please do start here and here. However, if you are confident that your dominant, color season is indeed Summer, then stay put! We’ve got much to cover in the next couple of articles that will be solely focused on the Summer Woman of Style. However, keep in mind that if you feel the colors from the summer palette are too soft and muted on you and you are absolutely sure that your dominant physical characteristics are cool I encourage you to go back and re-watch the winter color season tutorials.
Let’s take a look at the Soft Summer Color Palette
Women who are Soft Summer’s will have a noticeable soft, muted appearance to their skin coloring. Your hair and eyes are equally soft and cool, which allows you to wear the most softest, subtle colors from the spectrum of colors found within the soft summer color palette. Soft Summer Women of Style look their absolute best in cool water colors that are delicate and romantic with a slight richness compared to the Clear and Light Summer Color Palette. However, trying to borrow colors from your sister season the Deep, Clear or Cool Winter color palette will be too strong and overpowering on you. The best way to decribe the summer color palette is to picture the classic winter season color palette mixed with grey; this is what distingusihes the vivid, intense, bright color of the winter seasonal color palette from that of the delicate, toned colors of Soft Summer color palette. Also, if you happen to be a Soft Summer Woman of Style your contrast in coloring is equally cool and neutral; which means you should avoid high contrast and bright colors because they will be too strong for you to wear with your soft, delicate coloring.
Furthermore, if you are woman of color you might also fall within the range of summer color palette. As I have been noting throughout the Color Synergy Series – women of color do not always fall within the Winter or Autumn color palette. You might also be a Soft Summer Woman of Style if you have the following determining characteristics: Cool beige skin, mousy brown hair without highlights (if you do have highlights they are sublte and natural)and your eyes can range the spectrum of cloudy/smudgy hazel, hazel-green and cool soft brown. Notable examples of women of color who fall within the summer color palette are that of singer Rihanna, actress Jurnee Smolett and yes! Meghan Markle (check out my bonus color analysis on the Duchess below).
Caveat: I would like to also point out that one of the reason’s why I am passionate about including color analysis within my image consulting and personal styling practice is because women of color in the past were never given as much attention within the original color analysis system. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, women of color were either categorized as a deep winter or deep autumn season with emphasis usually put on women of color being mostly deep winters without further analysis or consideration of the nuanced, physical characteristics in skin tone, diverse eye patterns and hair colors. Thankfully, with the inception of the 12 Seasonal Color Analysis system it has expanded the application of color analysis to all women equally who do not neatly fit into just a basic – winter, summer, autumn or spring – season.
Introducing the Soft Summer Woman of Stye
Here we have actress Jurnee Smolett, a woman of color, makeup free; who presents as a Soft Summer Woman of Style. Notice her eyes, hair and overall skin coloring are cool and also neutral in appearence. There is little contrast between her hair, eyes and skin tone. However, next to a Deep Winter Woman of Style she would present as considerably softer and more delicate. Jurnee’s hair color matches her soft, cool eye color and her skin is soft, cool and delicate.
Next, we have actress Ruby Rose. What I find interesting about Ruby Rose is the fact that she has a sexy, bold style personality, yet her dominant color season is that of the delicate, Soft Summer color palette; quite a contraditcion. Ruby has stunning hazel-green eyes, soft, delicate, cool skin tone and her hair when it is not dyed is a cool dark brown color. Because Ruby’s style personality is quite bold and ecclectic she can easily wear her Accent colors as her POWER colors. However, on the red carpet I’ve noticed that she favors and leans more towards the darker colors from the Summer color palette with pops of her Accent and POWER colors incorporated every once and a while. Soft Summer Hair Types
Hair types of the Soft Summer palette are natually – COOL – and brown (most of the time); which narrows down the Soft Summer hair colors to that of: Mousy Soft Brown, Brown with natural highlights and Dark Brown. Note: Actress Jennifer Aniston favors wearing her hair in a golden-caramel/blonde which I personally feel taeks away from her natural beauty as a Soft Summer Woman of Style. I much prefer her with soft brown tresses.

Deep Winter Eye Types
Eye types of the Soft Summer Palette are cloudy/smudgy. Traditional eye types that fall within the Soft Summer color palette have been known to be romantic and soft in appearence and they inlude the following: Soft Brown, Soft Blue, Hazel, Hazel-Green. Check them out below!
What are POWER colors?
Your palettes POWER colors are colors, for example, from the Soft Summer color palette that will radiate against your vibrant natural coloring. POWER colors of the soft summer color palette convey a romantic vibration that are soft and feminine, which illuminates the best of who you are in your overall image and personal style, as well as your personal brand. These colors are your palettes GO-TO colors when you want to make a confident, powerful statement; especially in a business/corporate environments – more on that later!
What are your Anchor Colors?
The ANCHOR colors found within the Soft Summer color palette are considered neutral colors that can be found in your (or should be added to your) wardrobe capsules. Anchor colors ‘anchor’ your wardrobes overall look; for example, if you chose to wear a Cool Brown, 2-piece, pant suit to work or a job interview you can complement this outfit with your POWER colors as an inside blouse, completed with one of your palettes signature, ACCENT colors (coming up next!). Likewise, you can also wear your palettes anchor colors in your handbags, shoes, outdoor fall/winter/sping/summer accessories. Anchor colors are your palettes BEST neutral colors that pull everything together into a fabulous, cohesive personal style.
What are your Accent colors?
Lastly, your palettes ACCENT colors are the Soft Summer palettes most strongest colors that some women who fall within the soft summer color palette, may feel is too strong for them to wear within their actual wardrobe items. The rule for me and which I share with my clients is the 80/20 rule. This means that I have chosen to wear 80% of my palettes POWER + ANCHOR colors and about 20% of my palettes ACCENT colors only in my accessories, my nail color, and selectively in my makeup colors. For example, one of the accent colors from the soft summer palette is that of Cool Mint and Forrest Green. These colors might be too strong for some women; however, by utilizing the 80\20 rule you can incorporate your palettes accent on your nail polish, as lipgloss/lipstick which adds a pop of sultry color to your normal makeup palette or to your evening accessories. Again, how you choose to wear any of your palettes signature colors are personal to you.
