Mel’s Top 10: Fall Winter 2018/2019 Trends
Summer is slowly winding down and you know what that means… it’s time to begin the process of transitioning our fabulous summer wardrobe and accessories items for falls rich, decadent and eclectic color palette. Ladies, this Fall season you will be witnessing a flash back to the 80s, the nostalgic 70s and a peak into the future. Below I have highlighted my Top 10 Fall Winter 2018/2019 trends that are, in my opinion, wearable and on trend for the upcoming Fall 2018 and Winter 2019 season.
Also, a trend should never determine your self-worth or value; you should above anything else feel empowered, fabulous and comfortable showing off your unique style personality. Trends that emerge from season to season are here to guide on us on our journey to discovering the essence of our personal style. I’m not anti-trend, but I encourage you to adapt into your wardrobe what resonates the most with you and the rest you can leave it on the runway.
#1 Roaring Animal Prints
Yes ladies, animal prints are back with a roaring array of colors, wild stripes, zebra and ocelot. Everything from traditional leopard print to the psychedelic, neon animal prints. If you are a Bold Artistic style personality, you are going to absolutely love incorporating this trend into your wardrobe and accessories this season. However, if you are not a Bold style personality you can still experiment with the animal print trend this season, by strategically placing the animal print into your accessories (shoes, earrings, handbags and scarf). Other style personalities, such as the Whimsical Endearing Spirit may find this trend a bit too bold and loud; however knowing how to strategically place the animal print into your fall wardrobe is key.
#2 Nostalgic ‘70s’ Brown
70s brown in all shades will be worn with everything from coats, scarfs, handbags, boots, dresses and pantsuits; if you can wear it, get it in 70s brown. Why 70s brown and not regular brown? Let’s not get too technical ladies. Think back to the movies Boogie Nights and American Hustle; that sort of rich, decadent brown of the 70s is the perfect neutral color to have in your wardrobe this season. This variation of brown can be worn in as a monochromatic pant suit, accented with this seasons animal print or you can invest in a decadent, brown leather jacket to add texture to your casual weekend wardrobe. Now, keep in mind not everyone looks amazing in brown. Knowing what your best color palette is for the winter season will help you to decide if this trending color is something you can adapt into your fall 2018 wardrobe and accessories or leave it on the runway.
#3 Visions of Plaid Danced in My Head
When I first started researching this year’s trends I wasn’t too sure if I myself would wear this trend, but the more variations of plaid ensembles I came across via the fall 2018 runway presentations I grew to appreciate how versatile this pattern can be. The trick to incorporating this pattern into your fall 2018 wardrobe is to pay attention to the size of the pattern and the color combination. For example, if you are a petite woman you will look best wearing plaid patterns in medium. Large will be too overpowering on your petite frame and small plaid pattern will make you appear shorter than you are. Balance is key when wearing the fall 2018 plaid pattern trend. Also, if you are wearing plaid pants; whether cropped or full length pay attention the color of your shoes. Too much busyness from the waist down is distracting and will make you appear clownish.
#4 Leather it Up
Leather is always re-invented from season to season. It is a staple fabric for the 2018 fall/winter season and if you haven’t invested in a fabulous pair of authentic or faux leather pants, jacket, skirt or dress then you may want to consider adding at least one leather item (other than a handbag) to your fall 2018 wardrobe. Also, you do not have to break the bank account to purchase, for example, a fabulous pair of leather pants. Faux leather is also a practical option that can yield the same visual quality as a pair of $300 leather pants. Here are a couple faux leather items I found online: S.I.C Couture and Zara.
#5 Comfy Oversized Coats + Layering
This fall/winter 2018 season one of the main themes is fabulous, effortless and COMFORTABLE. I still love, love my tailored blazers and heavier outdoor jackets, but this fall 2018 season oversized coats in various patterns and colors (traditional and bold saturated colors) are your go to outer wear must have. Yes ladies, another investment piece for you to consider implementing into your exiting fall 2018 wardrobe. Now, once you’ve found the perfect boyfriend coat/jacket you’ll want to strategically layer various fabrics and patterns to take your outfit from 6-10. I realize that layering fabrics and patterns maybe an unknown style territory for you; so, what I advise you to do is experiment with one – simple – item and play around with layering it; for example, a large knitted scarf can be worn many ways with a fabulous oversized coat. Also, instead of tucking your silk blouse neatly into your pants or skirt, why not experiment with leaving it out and using a large silk scarf to create a belted, 80s layered look.
#6 Cape-ing into Style
Continuing with our fall jackets and coats, cape style jackets are everywhere this season. To be honest, not everyone can pull off the silhouette of a cape coat/jacket. Again, balance is key. Be sure to strategically style your look to visually present as elegant with clean lines. Too much fuss, or the wrong color can quickly make the cape coat/jacket ensemble look like a costume. If you do not own a cape jacket/coat, start simple with neutral colors, such as camel (which is another trending color for the season), black and navy blue. Keep your outfit underneath and accessories simple; the visual goal to keep in mind is sleek, polished and elegant, as this silhouette is a head tuner on its own.
#7 The Silk Foulard Dress
Regal, decadent silk scarves also known as the Foulard are back this fall 2018 fashion season. Versace’s iconic silk scarves (foulard) are a prominent accessory item that is synonymous with not only the Versace brand, but also with Hermès and Pucci; and this season designers are taking this silk printed scarf to a whole new level of style – introducing the Foulard dress. Not just worn as a scarf, it is now worn as a voluminous, silk printed dress (day and evening). So, this style of dress may not necessarily be for everyone. Remember what I stated at the beginning of this style review post; adapt into your wardrobe what resonates the most with you and the rest you can leave it on the runway where it belongs. I personally like this version of the original silk foulard; however, keep in mind that prints vary for the foulard dress this season and you will want to pay attention to the size of the print and how it drapes across your body. The Whimsical Endearing Spirit style personality or the Bold Artistic Maven would be able to pull of this look, with the right print size, color and fabulous accessories.
#8 You Slouch – Boots that is
80s are back with a bang! And I’m here for every minute of it. I am so happy slouch boots are back and hopefully here to say; at least for 2-cycles, will see. Whether it’s ankle slouch boots (think Madonna in the 80s) knee length slouch or thigh high slouch boots they will be making an appearance at your favorite shoe store this season. What I like about slouch boots is that they are versatile and can be worn with just about anything. Jeans and a cute plaid blazer, thigh length brown sweater dress or a fabulous oversized boyfriend jacket. Just be sure to invest in a pair of slouch boots that complement the length of your legs and don’t look too ‘slouchy’ on you as it will make your outfit appear disheveled.
#9 Dusty Blue is All You Really Need
Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean we have to stay within the traditional color palette of the autumn season. Although the fall season’s signature palette is decadent, rich and comforting; this 2018 fashion season designers have been inspired to transition this spring/summers dusty, pastel blue into the fall 2018 season. Again ladies, if you are unsure about what color of blue works best with your overall coloring, please do check out my Color Synergy Series (here + here) for an in-depth explanation in how you start to discover your POWER colors. If you want to experiment with this shade of blue start simple; try incorporating it into your hand bags, winter outerwear accessories, shoes and even your nail color. Once you’ve found the right shade of dusty blue you can then start purchasing wardrobe items in blouses, skirts and jackets.
Other variations of dusty blue
#10 Re-introducing the Carrie Bradshaw Bag
Finally, the Carrie Bradshaw bag is back! Yes, it has returned this fall 2018 season with a new look and attitude. Whether it is embellished with gold chains, dangling jewelry or eclectic patch work the Carrie bag is a fabulous finishing piece to complete your fall 2018 accessories. You can be as bold and eclectic as you like or keep the focal point on one specific area of your bag. If you have determined that your style personality is that of the Classic Chic Conservative Woman of Style, a handbag similar to that of the iconic Carrie bag worn with a crisp white blouse, fabulous pair of jeans and a stunning pair of brown slouch boots with mid length heels would look amazing on you for a casual weekend look.
Notable Mention: The Future is Silver – For Now
I decided to add this to our fall style review. Take it or leave it, futuristic silver is here for now. I’m not too crazy about it, but if you’d like to experiment with it as an evening option I think it would work well as a formal occasion ensemble. If you do choose to wear silver during the day; don’t go overboard. A silver handbag, stunning mule heels or as a scarf as an accent color works well for this particular trend.
