Many women who are currently experiencing transformative life transitions have temporarily experienced losing their identity and self-direction in life, which ultimately contributes further to their dissatisfaction of the life they are currently living and no longer identify with. I also found myself at a crossroad when I too was undergoing a profound spiritual shift that resulted in a powerful transition within my own life, which led to the realization that my personal brand at the then time no longer suited or reflected the new direction my life was heading in, nor telegraphed the image I wanted to impress upon other people in my life, both personally and professionally.
When our lifestyle does not authentically align with our core personal values and our life’s purpose, we wrestle internally with the person we want to become and have positively projected outwards into the world.
Psychological studies have proven time and again that our personal style and image does play an integral role in our lives whether we are aware of it or not. In a 2012 study initiated by Northwestern University looked at the emotional and mental impact clothing can have upon our social behavior both personally and professionally. The concept of Enclothed Cognition studies the symbolic meaning our clothing impresses upon us and others, as well as the physical experience we derive from wearing them. Our personal style and clothing choices are not only a representation of how well we can put ourselves together in the latest fashion trend and colour of the moment, but rather how our clothing, accessories (shoes and jewelry), preferred hairstyle and even handbag can dramatically influence the ways in which we behave and conduct ourselves in certain types of social environments.
The crux of the study suggests that when we are wearing clothing or accessory items that empower us our behavior, body posture and overall communicative style with people we come into contact with positively changes, and as a result we are indirectly influencing how people will initially perceive and treat us, – you control the visual narrative of your personal brand. This is why it is extremely important to understand why your personal style and image does play a vital role in your transformation because to effectively transition from one phase of your life to the next you must be prepared to show up exactly how you want to be perceived, otherwise your transition and transformation will not yield the positive results you envisioned or desire. Ladies, we are essentially communicating to the world on a subconscious level that we either value and respect ourselves or we dislike and undervalue our self-worth; which ultimately influences how key people in our life will respond to, interact and communicate with us based on the same level of respect we extend to ourselves.
